Wentworth History Tour

Uncover the rise and fall of this remarkable House - from its 1600s beginnings to its life as an aristocratic family home, then a teacher training college, and finally to the present-day efforts of the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust.
Learn about the lives of those who lived at Wentworth Woodhouse including the Second Marquess of Rockingham (the First Yorkshire Prime Minister) and the Earl of Strafford – who quite literally lost his head!

Accessibility

For the first time, Screamtime iscoming to Wentworth Woodhouse. This is the ultimate after-dark scare experience for thrill-seekers and horror fans. The Garden will be closed from 4pm on these dates, and you may notice set-up for the event taking place including some light projections on to the House and sound effects on the route from the House to the car park.

Top to Bottom Tour
Thursday to Saturday, 11.00am or 2.00pm
Back by popular demand! Join us for the return of our sell-out Top to Bottom Guided Tour which includes exclusive access to the vaulted cellars and attic rooms (usually off-limits to the public!) This tour will share stories of parties in the cellars, family lives on the upper floors, and includes access to some of our more derelict areas awaiting restoration.

- The Top To Bottom tour runs for approximately 90 minutes.
- The Top to Bottom tour explores areas that aren’t on the public route. You will go from the cellars at the very bottom of the House, to the attics at the very top.

- Due to the age and nature of the House, some areas on this tour are only accessible via stairs and there are some uneven surfaces.
- The tour is not advise for people who:
- Experience claustrophobia
- Have respiratory issues in old, damp environments.
- Have difficulty climbing stairs (there are 80 stairs on the route)
- Have difficulties in confined spaces or where ceilings heights are low and stooped walking is required.
- Would be unable to climb a short, vertical ladder in an emergency

Join our volunteer researchers, Caroline and Jonny as they guide you through a focused tour of the Van Dyck paintings on display, exploring the artist’s work and his relationship with Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford. Discover new insights and stories that go beyond the interpretation boards, shedding light on art, politics, and power in 17th-century England.

Wentworth Woodhouse’s 25-year restoration has been dubbed ‘the most challenging restoration of a generation’. On this behind-the-scenes guided tour discover the craftsmanship and skill that has gone into creating, and now restoring and conserving, this special place. Lady Mabel College Tour

Did you know that in 1950 a women’s teacher training PE college was established at Wentworth Woodhouse? Join a former Lady Mabel College student on a fascinating behind-the-scenes Guided Tour of areas used by the staff and students in their day-to-day life. From badminton in the ballroom, to bunking down in Bedlam, you’ll find out what student life was like in the magnificent ‘Big House’ and learn about the impact the College had on education.
