Brush and bubbles at the ready! Unleash your inner-artist in this 2.5-hour workshop hosted by award-winning glass designer, Emma Britton, as part of our Big House Heroes fundraising campaign.

Take an inspiring walk around the glorious Wentworth Woodhouse Gardens before painting an arrangement of flowers and foliage in one of Emma's decorative vases. You'll create a beautiful, modern artwork to take home and be offered helpful tips and tricks throughout, along with a glass of pro or no-secco to enjoy. The perfect way to spend a Friday with a friend and try something new and creative!

For those wanting to learn more about George Stubbs and his connection to Wentworth Woodhouse, these researcher-led tours are just the ticket!

Join our researchers, Caroline and Richard, as they take you beneath the surface and explore the world of Stubbs. What set him apart from his contemporaries? How was he connected to Wentworth Woodhouse and the Second Marquess of Rockingham? 

Caroline and Richard will also share their fascinating insight into the people that feature in some of Stubbs’ pieces – employees of the Second Marquess, who lived and worked on the Wentworth Estate.

Once again, we're participating in Heritage Open Days where, this year, you can come and explore our fifty acres of Gardens free of charge!

Families and garden-lovers alike can enjoy a day in the Wentworth Woodhouse Gardens and discover many hidden delights, from the sweeping views from the Ha-Ha and South Terrace to the wildflower meadow – so much awaits. The Forest of Bewilderment natural play area is a haven for little explorers and their families with plenty of natural play areas to enjoy, and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome to join in the family fun.

Can you put your best foot forward and complete our Figure of Eight Follies Challenge?

Back by popular demand, our Follies Challenge covers 20km (13 miles) of South Yorkshire countryside and takes in the four follies linked to Wentworth Woodhouse’s history. Our team of guides will give you a warm welcome on the day as well as giving a brief talk at each monument. A light lunch will be provided in the Low Drawing Room part way through the walk, where you will be able to rest your legs and enjoy a selection of savoury snacks and refreshments, before heading back out to complete the challenge!

Additional Information

• The terrain is moderate with some steady climbs, uneven surfaces, stiles and sections which can be muddy and slippery.

To celebrate the world-class art that George Stubbs created here in Rotherham, we invite you to join us for a day of drawing with a professional tutor and a real horse!

The day will be led by professional artist Richard Johnson. In the making of his work, Stubbs studied his subjects at close quarters and in great detail. Drawing from life in this way enabled him to capture not just a horse’s physicality but also its character. This full-day class is devised so that, with Richard’s guidance, you can attempt the same.

The class is ideal for amateur and professional artists working at an intermediate level or above.

Join us after-hours and gain a fascinating insight into the exhibition with those who made it happen. Find out from Curator, Kate Stoddart, why certain artists were chosen and how their work relates to Stubbs’ work.

The event will also see us ‘in conversation’ with featured artists, Melanie Manchot and Kathleen Herbert, who will be discussing their inspiration and how their pieces link to the exhibition, with an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

Join Penistone Folk Ensemble as they return for another entertaining evening of Playford music from 1651, as well as other early composers including Susato, for our next fundraising event. The music will be performed on fiddles, mandolins, viola, concertina, guitars bass, bassoon, recorders and Flemish bagpipes – sure to be a musical feast for all!

The first half of the concert will feature the music of Irish bard and harpist, Turlough O'Carolan, with narration provided by David Alton on his life and music with special guest, Alejandro Barnett, playing the harp. The second half will feature music from the 17th century as well as a performance by the group's display dancers. The band and dancers will be dressed in 17th century costume and will be playing an exciting array of instruments to delight your ears.

Head up to the ‘Big House’ for a chance to reminisce and share stories of life ‘down the pit’ over coffee and cake. Open to all coal miners and their family and friends who are interested in learning more about local history from local people.

Learn how to design a room interior based on your favourite piece of art in this interactive workshop hosted by Art Director, Lauri King, as part of our Big House Heroes fundraising campaign.

Lauri has qualifications and experience in Interior Architecture, Design Studies and Interior Styling. She has worked on projects for Country Homes & Interiors Magazine, HELLO! Magazine, George at ASDA, Living TV, Jimmy Choo and Burberry, among others. She is passionate about designing beautiful yet realistic spaces which enhance your life.

Bring along a copy of your favourite artwork and leave the workshop with your own custom concept, samples and sourcing boards / plans, ready to design an interior you will love as much as you love your chosen art piece!

• Guests will be required to bring a notepad and pen as well as a copy of their favourite piece of art (printed or digital). Alternatively, let us know beforehand and the host will provide a copy.

Historic Houses Director General, Ben Cowell, joins us to talk about his latest book, The British Country House Revival (Boydell, 2024). The book traces the history of the Historic Houses Association from its foundation in 1973, and the significant revival in fortunes that historic house properties have experienced in the half-century since the V&A’s landmark exhibition in 1974, ‘The Destruction of the Country House’.

Back by popular demand, Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society return this October for an evening of star gazing in the Gardens.

Have you ever wanted to look into the cosmos and learn about the stars and planets you can see? If so, this is your chance to test out a telescope and see into the universe with experts on-hand to help!

Ever wanted to find out what goes bump in the night up at the ‘Big House’?

Grab your torch and join us for a late-night exploration of the House & Gardens as well as parts of the Stables usually off-limits to visitors… but be sure to have your wits about you!

A guide will accompany you as you explore different rooms in the House where you can either silently watch and wait or use filming equipment to capture elements of your experience.

In 1948 and 1949 there were various sales held in London of the selected contents of Wentworth Woodhouse. Head Guide & House Historian, David Allott, will help to shed some light on items dispersed from the House and how they went on to be housed in museums, private collections and other institutions.

Come and join us for our next fundraising event in The Marble Saloon - an evening of song with Thurnscoe Male Voice Choir as they celebrate their centenary year. Expect a wide range of male voice choir songs ranging from traditional numbers through to pop songs and musical hits from South Pacific, Les Misérables and Cats!

Gerald Dickens, the great-great grandson of Charles Dickens, returns to Wentworth Woodhouse once more with a performance of the classic, festive ghost story A Christmas Carol.

This thrilling one-man performance, followed by a two course Victorian meal, is the perfect way to spend a dark, winter evening at our final fundraising event of the year!

Desiree Reynolds of Sheffield Archives's Dig Where You Stand joins us to share stories of Black history at Wentworth Woodhouse that have been uncovered as part of the Sheffield Archives project. Dig Where You Stand is an archival justice movement made up of artists, archivists, educators and local community members.The team have unearthed the untold stories of people of colour living, working and putting down roots in South Yorkshire over hundreds of years, including stories with a connection to the Big House.
