17 September 2025- The Fitzwilliams Revisited by Eleanor Doughty
Eleanor Doughty invites you on a captivating journey into the world of the Fitzwilliam family and the storied Wentworth Woodhouse. In this talk, she reflects on the research behind Heirs and Graces—from delving into private family archives to tracing the lives of Peter and Obby Fitzwilliam through their friends and relations. Along the way, she will unveil rarely seen images and intimate glimpses into a distinguished family’s life, offering perspectives both personal and previously unexplored.
1 October 2025- Madam Geneva: Gin and the Georgians by Dr Peter Collinge (Keele University)
Dive into the world of Georgian gin - the demon drink of the eighteenth century. As it flooded towns and cities, in its wake came illicit gatherings, poisonings, crime, scandal death and murder. Aghast at its intoxicating and debilitating effects, especially among the poor, moral crusaders took to the streets and to the printing press; so too did its promoters. The results were both riotous and turbulent.
5 November 2025, Restoring and Revitalising Wentworth Woodhouse’s Camellia House by Dorian Proudfoot.
Dorian Proudfoot is an accredited conservation architect and Chief Executive of Donald Insall Associates. Donald Insall’s were the architects who worked on the transformation of The Camellia House at Wentworth Woodhouse, which sat derelict for five decades, was listed on Historic England’s ‘Buildings at Risk’ register. As part of ongoing works to reimagine the wider Wentworth estate, they led a conservation project to restore and revitalise the Grade II*-listed Georgian building. The project has recently been recognised with a Europa Nostra Award, one of Europe's most prestigious heritage awards. Join Dorian to hear more about the restoration and its process.
